Class 1 Needwood
Our NHS art work is inspired by the great Dutch pot-impressionist Vincent van Gough.
The children began by watching a short documentary on the artist and viewing examples of his most famous works including self-portraits and Starry Night.
The children wanted to recreate Sunflowers, arguably one of Gough's most famous works. They began by experimenting with using the oil pastels, using them to colour, draw, blend, shade and manipulate with finger tips to create different effects. They then selected a colour palette from which they could create their own interpretation of Sunflowers!
The children were skilled in their manipulation of the oil pastels, which can be a tricky medium to use as they tend to smudge. They quickly mastered blending the colours and were able to show tones of light and colour.
Whilst completing these art works, the children watched and listened to Fiona Bruce on the BBC programme Fake or Fortune, watching the episode in which they try to prove the authenticity of a Van Gough work. They really enjoyed the episode and were fascinated at the secrecy and detective work around the painting's investigation.
